Three Odes to the Dikes

Together, we keep the dikes sturdy.

 

When something is well managed, we often take it for granted. A non-flooded Netherlands is (fortunately) just the most ordinary thing in the world. But a lot goes into it. Maintaining and fortifying our dikes is one of the most logical and visible core tasks of the Water Board Amstel, Gooi, and Vecht. With the campaign ‘Ode to the Dikes,’ in collaboration with the Water Board Amstel, Gooi, and Vecht, we make the 1.4 million residents aware each year that living in an area below sea level is not a given. The water board thanks its residents, who ensure through the payment of water board taxes that the dikes can be maintained.

 

In 2021, a dike poem adorned the Ringdijk in Amsterdam-East for two weeks. The 500-meter-long poem is an ode to the Amsterdam dikes, written by artist Sef. With this, the Water Board Amstel, Gooi, and Vecht raised awareness in the region about the dikes, their maintenance, and water safety. In 2022, Freek de Jonge took the baton and placed a monumental poem on the Westzeedijk near the West Battery in Muiden. And in 2023, singer DO commemorated the dike shift in Wilnis 20 years ago with her 100-meter-long dike poem on the Ringdijk in Wilnis.

 

We are responsible for the creative concept, design, execution, and PR surrounding this activation, which was positively received nationally and regionally.

 

The dike poem is applied to the dikes each year with environmentally friendly paint, causing the poem to naturally fade away over time.

Dijk van een gedicht door Sef
Een ambtenaar in functie. Haar titel waardig.
Wie houdt een indringer tegen als het nodig is.
Door haar strenge deurbeleid kan het Oosten slapen.
En weten allebei mijn voeten goed wat droogte is.
Heldhaftig, barmhartig en vastberaden.
Bewoners, wandelaars, gasten van La Vallade.
Waakt over ons allemaal, dus wij doen alles met haar samen.
Een dijk om door een ringetje te halen.

Vindingrijk door Freek de Jonge
Waar de visser bot vangt de koe een haas.
De beste stuurlui aan wal staan te kijken.
Polderen wij ons rijk dankzij de dijken.
De zee werd meer maar ook minder helaas.
De koningin van het vindingrijk.
Komt om een zondvloed te voorkomen.
Rivieren traag door laagland laten stromen.
Niet meer weg met een vinger in de dijk.
